Upcoming Events

COMMUNITY KIDS is having our first annual

Martin Luther King Day of service

(organized by Lindsey Allen a senior at Wotton HS)

Monday January 18th.

It will be held from 10am to 2pm at the Rockshire Giant (inside the mall area) off Wootton Parkway.

A variety of tables will be set up to work on different projects for elderly, kids and homeless that are in our community.  We will be providing support to Childrens Hospital, Interages, Manna Food, Sophia House and a few local nursing homes

The Holiday Toy Drive, gift wrap and Party were very well received.  We were able to provide holiday gifts and Grocery gift cards to over 250 families in need through the Linkages to Learning program.  The parents and children enjoyed the party, dinner and dancing for the kids .  Their appreciative faces as they received the gifts was worth all the hard work the Community Kids did for the project.  Thanks so much for everyones support on this annual event.  It is always one of my favorites!

The Community Kids Canned Food drive for Manna Food Center was a big success.  Community Kids collected 6200 pounds of food ! They doubled the amount they had colllected last year!

Community Kids worked hard through RAIN and shine to collect the food for Manna. This was a very fun project, that addressed an important need in our local community. Manna Food Center has seen a 50% increase of the number of people in our community turning to them for emergency food. They simply could not continue to meet the larger demands without support from groups like Community Kids!
Thanks to everyone who helped with this project!

The BEANIE BABIE PROJECT went great.  The contact in the military is now stationed in Afghanistan and was touched with the letters of support written to the servicemen and the large amount of beanie babies sent  They are in the process of distributing the beanie babies to the children in Afghanistan.  He will be forwarding pictures of the kids for us to share.  RFMS was very thankful for our help in completeing this project.  THANKS to all who could attend this last minute event!

Community Girls is thrilled with another Award from Montgomery County this month.  County Executive Isiah Leggett presented our organization this month with an award recognizing the significant contribution we make to the Linkages to Learning program.  They value the support we have given to their programs.  They also love the hands on help our Community Kids provide, and hope as these kids grow they will continue to support those in need!

Montgomery County Commission on Children and Youth also honored Community Girls with a Nancy Dworkin award .  It is an honor to receive this, and be recognized for the hard work the group has done, for our various partners in the community. (To be recognized you need to be nominated by at least 2 seperate organizations in Montgomery County.)

We were highlighted in the one of our partners, Interages Annual newsletter recognized for the difference Community Girls has made towards their organization.  The article included a picture of the group at MLK Day.  I will try to post the article in the newsletter.

Big thanks to Fine Earth Landscape for helping provide much needed plants and guidance for our Stepping Stones gardening project. www.fineearth.com

What We Do

We perform community service in supervised activities. Typically, 15 to 30 volunteers participate in a 2-to-6 hour service activities with one or more chaperones. Community Girls Inc. has collected toys for the needy, made blankets for the homeless, and worked on a farm that supports mentally challenged adults. Among the organizations we work with are Linkages to Learning, MANNA, Adopt a Stream Program through Montgomery County, Martha's Table, Stepping Stones Shelter, McKenna's Wagon and more.

Earn Student Service Learning Hours

Students can earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours by participating in many of the Community Girl's activities. Montgomery County Public Schools requires each student to perform 75 hours of community service to meet state graduation requirements.

Currently, most of the projects we do are with MCPS pre-approved organizations.

Would You Like to Volunteer?

HELP NEEDED: Adult leaders are needed for individual projects.  We have been asked by many of our partners to help them with upcoming projects (and many we have wanted to complete but did not have the adult chaperone). Please let me know if you or someone you knows can help lead a project.

We are always appreciative of volunteers. Parents and other adults are always welcome to participate in our service activities. Every additional activity provides our students one more way to improve their community.
